Messica & The Bass Alkemist are a Hull-based DJ and production duo proving that sometimes music doesn’t leave you — life just gets in the way for a while.
Messica first DJed and produced in her younger years, playing gigs as far afield as China and Egypt, before a recession, building businesses and raising a family took life in another direction. Lee came from a different musical background as a producer, sound engineer, singer and guitarist, before his own journey with music was similarly interrupted.
They met in October 2024, and Messica introduced Lee properly to the world of drum & bass. He was hooked. After moving house, the old Technics 1210s came back out, the vinyl started spinning and the spark returned.
The turning point came when Messica was approached to DJ an International Women’s Day event. Having never played on modern digital decks, she initially declined. The promoter lent them a set to practise on instead.
That turned out to be a fairly expensive loan.
They bought their own decks, built a studio and started producing together — combining their musical backgrounds with a shared obsession for drum & bass, jungle, ragga and soundsystem culture.
Their DJ sets are meticulously planned and rehearsed, with track selection, transitions and energy carefully crafted to deliver the strongest performance possible, while their original productions continue to develop a sound that’s unmistakably their own.
In less than two years they’ve gone from pulling old records out of storage to releasing original music, playing together live, broadcasting their monthly Bassline Therapy show on Venn Radio and building towards bigger stages across the UK and beyond.
They’ve also somehow found time to get married.
Two musicians. One second chance at the music they never really stopped loving.
